(The other) Miller time ends with Cardinals

Long-time organizational pitching coach Dyar Miller will not return to the St. Louis Cardinals in 2013. The former MLB pitcher was St. Louis' bullpen coach in 2012.

After working 19 years in the St. Louis Cardinals organization, the most recent being the team's major league bullpen coach in 2012, Dyar Miller is not being retained for 2013. General manager John Mozeliak informed the media of the club's decision on Thursday morning.

The other coaches on Mike Matheny's first-year staff will be invited to return. They include bench coach Mike Aldrete, pitching coach Derek Lilliquist (who had been the prior bullpen coach), hitting coach Mark McGwire, first base coach Chris Maloney and third base coach Jose Oquendo.

Before joining Mike Matheny's first major league staff, Miller had served as the organization's Minor League Pitching Coordinator since 2008. Prior to that, he spent seven seasons (2001 to 2007) as pitching coach for Triple-A Memphis. Miller received the George Kissell Award for excellence in player development in 2001.

Earlier, Miller spent four years as a roving pitching instructor in the system (1997 to 2000). During the 1995-96 seasons, Miller was the pitching coach at Triple-A Louisville. He previously coached in the Cardinals system at Arkansas (1985) and Louisville (1986) and was the bullpen coach for the Chicago White Sox in 1987 and pitching and bullpen coach for the Sox in 1988. Miller also coached in the Detroit system (1989-90) and was with the Cleveland organization as a pitching coach from 1991 to 1994.

As a pitcher, the now-66-year-old was originally signed by Philadelphia. Miller, a right-hander, spent seven years in the majors, pitching for Baltimore (1975-77), California (1977-79), Toronto (1979) and the New York Mets (1980-81), compiling a 23-17 record with 22 saves and a 3.23 ERA.
