Eight St. Louis Cardinals farmhands help comprise the Surprise Saguaros. Other organizations represented on the Surprise team are the Boston Red Sox, Kansas City Royals, New York Mets, and the Texas Rangers.
Currently, the Saguaros have a record of 12-9 and are a half game behind the Peoria Javelinas in the West Division. The team has posted an impressive 9-2 record at home.
With a .267 average, the club is third in the six-team league in average and on base percentage (.346). Surprise has scored 115 runs, second-best mark on the circuit, while their 13 home runs ranks fourth.
The Saguaros lead the AFL with a 3.25 ERA and are third in strikeouts with 179. The team WHIP of 1.40 is the second-best mark while they also are allowing the second-fewest walks, 71.
Kolten Wong fell out of the league top 10 in batting after a poor week at the plate. The second baseman is two for his last 12 and saw his average drop 37 points over the last seven days. Wong's 19 hits are tied for the fifth-best mark in the AFL and still pace the Saguaros.
Mike O'Neill had a worse week than Wong with only one hit in his last 10 at bats. He has fallen out of the league top 10 in on base percentage but is still a respectable 11th.
Seth Blair proved he is human, giving up his first earned run during his start this week. The right-hander still has posted an impressive ERA of 0.68 which is the fourth-best mark in the league. His 18 strikeouts ranks as the fourth-best mark, as well.
Boone Whiting is third in the league in innings pitched and has an impressive ERA of 2.08.
Kevin Siegrist has racked up 15 strikeouts while allowing only two walks. Sam Freeman finished his AFL stint with four strikeouts in his final two appearances.
