Mike O'Neill's single in the bottom of the eighth broke a 3-3 tie as Surprise slipped by Scottsdale 4-3 at home on Monday afternoon.
The single to right, which came with runners at the corners and two outs, joined a double and a free pass on the designated hitter's stat sheet in five plate appearances and made a winner out of the Mets' Greg Peavey. Peavey shut out the Scorpions in the eighth and ninth on just one walk. He pitched in relief of starter Kevin Siegrist, who faced Scottsdale for the first time.
Siegrist fanned an impressive eight Scorpions in four innings, allowing three singles and a double with one base-on-balls. His only tally yielded came in the third when a runner at third stole home. The southpaw threw 66 pitches, 45 for strikes, with three ground outs, one fly out and a hit batsman.
O'Neill was joined in Surprise's line-up by Colin Walsh, who was hitless in two at bats but also walked twice with a run scored. He touched home in the third after getting on via a free pass. A triple by Royal Brian Fletcher allowed the right fielder to score and put the Saguaros up 3-1. Walsh's second base-on-balls in the fourth sent teammate O'Neill to third and jammed the sacks full after the latter doubled to center with two outs. O'Neill moved to second via a plunked batter which brought Walsh up. However, a subsequent groundout to first wasted a prime opportunity to pile on more runs.
On the MIA front, Kolten Wong has not played since November 8th due to a minor leg injury.
Tuesday's game: at Mesa, 12:35 pm AZ time (1:35 pm CT), Ben Henry (0-1, 10.50)
