Cardinals reduce 40-man roster to 39

The St. Louis Cardinals have placed pitcher Chris Carpenter onto the 60-day disabled list, giving them roster flexibility this spring.

On Friday, the St. Louis Cardinals placed pitcher Chris Carpenter on the 60-day disabled list due to continued irritation in his cervical spine and right shoulder.

"We felt that it was best to make an official announcement on Carp's roster status today from both the administrative standpoint and also from a roster flexibility standpoint," stated Cardinals Senior V.P. and General Manager John Mozeliak.

In 2012, Carpenter, 37, appeared in three regular season games and three postseason games after spending most of the year on the disabled list. The veteran right-hander is in the final year of his current two-year $21 million contact. Carpenter is not expected to pitch this season and by this move is prohibited from returning until at least June.

With this transaction, the Cardinals' 40-man roster, which was full, is now at 39. That allows the club the flexibility to potentially add another player to its season-opening roster who is not already on the 40-man and without having to waive another player.

That potential addition could be a free agent signing, trade acquisition or a non-roster invitee to camp who earns his way onto the 25-man Opening Day roster next month.

For example, when shortstop Ronny Cedeno was signed last month, the club designated left-handed reliever Barret Browning for assignment to make room on its 40-man roster for Cedeno. Browning was exposed to waivers, but after clearing, he was assigned to the minor leagues.
