Early Cardinals minor league working rosters

How St. Louis Cardinals minor leaguers were organized in workouts early in spring training camp.

When the full compliment of St. Louis Cardinals minor leaguers began reporting to spring training camp 10 days ago, players were organized into working groups. On Wednesday, intersquad games begin and personnel will be shifted from the rosters listed below into Memphis, Springfield, Palm Beach and Peoria 1 and 2 rosters for external games starting on Thursday.

So, these working rosters are shared for your interest only. They are already out of date. For example, the four players cut from major league camp this week – Jorge Rondon, Kevin Siegrist, Cody Stanley and Barret Browning - joined the minor league camp after these rosters were published.

Further, as the first intersquad games begin today, it is clear looking at the pitchers scheduled to throw that each of the "Teams 1-6" to face off will be deploying pitchers from most every column below.

Though he said it last spring, Cardinals farm director John Vuch's words about the insignificance of these rosters are just as relevant today as they were 12 months ago.

"Our rosters are constantly in flux and we don't want the players or others to read much into them," Vuch said. "Their only purpose at this stage is to ensure we have enough guys on each club for fundamentals.

"Invariably, people look at a roster and see one guy at Palm Beach and another at Quad Cities and assume that means something. That is one of the reasons we don't go out of our way to publicize rosters.

"No matter how often we tell people they don't mean anything, they try to make more out of them than what's there. As we told our players, if we already knew who was going where, we'd just bring in about 110 guys, play games and send them north," Vuch concluded.
