Cardinals Minor League Notebook: 04/11/13

The Cardinals' minor league affiliates went 1-0 with one suspension and one postponement on Wednesday. Palm Beach won a pitching duel but Memphis' game was suspended in extras. Peoria's contest was postponed.

Results from games played Wednesday, April 10.

New Orleans 6 at Memphis 2 (suspended in 12th)

Wednesday's game was suspended with one out in the 12th after the Zephyrs plated four tallies off reliever Nick Greenwood. The contest will resume on Thursday at 11:05 am CT with the regularly scheduled game to follow.

Starter John Gast kept the opposition off the board through six, yielding three singles and a double, one walk and a hit batsman. Gast fanned five, throwing 88 pitches, 56 for strikes. He left with his squad clinging to a 1-0 lead, thanks to a unearned run in the third. Adron Chambers reached on a force out, stole second and went to third on a fielding error. Oscar Taveras drove him in with a line drive single to right.

J.R. Towles doubled the score in the bottom of the seventh with his first home run of 2013, a solo shot over the left field wall. Sam Freeman continued the shutout in the sixth and seventh, giving up two hits but no base-on-balls while striking out one. Victor Marte suffered his third blown save and second in as many days when he coughed up five singles for two runs to tie the game.

Palm Beach 1 vs. St. Lucie 0

Kyle Hald and Heath Wyatt combined for a three-hitter as Palm Beach (4-2) handed St. Lucie its first defeat of 2013, 1-0. The series stands at one win apiece with the decisive game three set for Thursday.

Hald (W, 1-0), our Player of the Day, faced the minimum through 6 2/3 although one Met singled in the third only to be picked off by the lefty. The Virginia native then worked around a single and ground-rule double by coaxing a pop out to second to finish his stint. Hald struck out four with eight ground outs and four fly outs. Heath Wyatt tossed two perfect frames to notch his first save.

Three of the Beach Birds' five hits produced the contest's sole tally, all coming with two out. James Ramsey, Matt Williams and Colin Walsh all singled with Ramsey crossing before Walsh was nailed trying to take second for the final out of the inning.

Outfielder Stephen Piscotty was hit by a pitch in the third inning and removed from the game for what a club official called "precautionary reasons."

Thursday's game: vs. St. Lucie (NYM) (5-1), 6:35 pm ET, Sam Gaviglio (1-0, 1.80 ERA)
