On Friday night, Garcia left the Redbirds game in the fourth inning after reaching base due to a throwing error by the pitcher on his sacrifice bunt. On Saturday, the 23-year-old was placed on the seven-day disabled list.
Overall this season, Garcia is hitting .250 (21-for-84) with six doubles and six RBI in 29 games while playing shortstop and third base defensively.
Catcher Travis Tartamella, recalled from Double-A Springfield, replaced Garcia on the Memphis roster.
The 25-year-old began the season with Springfield, but was brought up to Memphis on April 22 when J.R. Towles went onto the DL. Tartamella was returned to Double-A on May 6 when Jermaine Curtis came back to Triple-A from St. Louis.
In his most recent stint with Springfield, Tartamella went 0-for-5 with a walk and run scored. Among all stops in 2013, the right-handed hitter is 5-for-33 (.152) at the plate.
In Springfield's related move, catcher Cody Stanley has been assigned to Springfield from the A-Advanced Palm Beach Cardinals. The 24-year-old has gone 19-for-84 this season in the Florida State League. Stanley's line is .226/.256/.321/.577. The left-handed hitter will be making his Texas League debut.
Palm Beach's corresponding roster transaction to replace Stanley is the addition of catcher Jesus Montero from extended spring training camp. It will be the 21-year-old's second stint in the FSL. Montero filled in with Palm Beach from April 27 until May 8, during which time he went 3-for-11 (.273) with one double and two RBI. The right-handed hitter struck out three times and did not take a walk.
