2013 Dominican Summer League Cardinals update

Status of a number of current and former Cardinals youngsters in the Dominican Summer League.

At the time the 2013 Dominican Summer League Cardinals preview ran late last week, there were a number of open questions regarding players both on the roster previously as well as new arrivals. A number of those items are now cleared up.

The departed

First with the bad news, as three members of the 2012 DSL Cardinals have been released by the organization. They are outfielder George Araujo, pitcher Anthony De La Cruz and outfielder Domingo Sanchez.

Araujo, 18, could not cut it with the bat, hitting just .136 and .140 in his two seasons in the DSL. De La Cruz, a 20-year-old, compiled a 9.08 over his pair of summers pitching for the Cards, in 2010 an 2011. The left-hander did not appear last season. Sanchez, 19, played in just one season for the DSL Cards, logging a woeful .097 batting average (9-for-93) in 2012.

Breaking down the roster

Checking the Dominican Summer League Cardinals roster here at The Cardinal Nation, you will see 35 players with either a uniform number, or marked DL or RL. Not coincidentally, 35 is the allowable roster size in the DSL.

13 others, denoted by "EST," completed for the DSL Cardinals in 2012, but have since graduated. This spring, they were completing in the Cardinals extended spring training camp in Jupiter, Fla. and should be making one of the short-season clubs later this month. They will be moved to those rosters when known.

The suspended

We will start with the five players on the restricted list, RL. They are currently ineligible to play, two for less than ideal reasons and three simply due to timing.

As explained here last July, Estarlin Arias has a total of 16 games in 2013 to complete his suspension before becoming eligible to play. The 19-year-old originally signed with the Washington Nationals last spring, but the deal was voided when Arias failed his drug test and his contract was voided. His 50-game suspension kicked into action upon his signing with a new organization, in this case the Cardinals.

The Cardinals have followed that same formula with a new signee, shortstop Diory Paulino. The 18-year-old Dominican was released by the Red Sox last July upon his positive PED test and suspension. The specific substance was metabolites of Boldenone.

The right-handed hitting Paulino appeared in two games for the Red Sox's DSL club last July. In eight at-bats, singled once and struck out three times. With the 72-game DSL schedule, Paulino should become eligible in early August.

The in-process

Three new Cardinals are still under investigation and will not become eligible until their pending status is changed. They are all Dominicans - 19-year-old third baseman Jorge Baez, 6-foot-5 right-handed pitcher Ronald Sanchez, also 19, and 18-year-old Rigobert Urena, a 6-foot-4 lefty..

The injured

Two right-handed pitchers, Luis De La Rosa and Fernando Gonzalez, have been placed on the disabled list, noted as "DL" on the roster page.

De La Rosa, 20, logged a 5.40 ERA in eight relief appearances last season. He fanned 18 in 15 innings, but also issued 14 free passes. Gonzalez is in his third DSL campaign, having missed all but four games last summer. The 19-year-old has a career ERA of 4.86.

The adjustment

A signee earlier in the off-season who was initially identified as Dionauris Pena will be going by Dionenrys Pena. The 18-year-old is a 6-foot-1, 185-pounder from Guayubin, Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic. The right-handed hitter joins Venezuelan Joshua Lopez and Colombian Sergio Ripoll as the Cardinals' backstops this season.

Here are the 10 new Cardinals players identified in the earlier article with complete height, weight and hometown information. As always, you can click on any player's highlighted name to be taken to his profile page here at The Cardinal Nation, where all related information can be found.
