Cardinals Minor League Notebook: 06/09/13

On Saturday, Joey Cuda pitched well for Peoria and Memphis' Oscar Taveras played for the first time since May 12 .

Memphis 1 vs. Nashville 7

This game was highlighted by Oscar Taveras' return to the lineup after missing 25 games. Taveras doubled in four at bats.

On the hill, Mitchell Boggs got the start as he tries to find the rhythm that would allow him to return to the big leagues. He did not find it Saturday night. Boggs gave up three runs in three innings and did not manage a strikeout.

Jermaine Curtis and Rob Johnson each collected two hits for the Redbirds. One of Johnson's hits was a solo home run, his sixth of the season.

Sunday's game: Memphis (32-29) vs. Nashville (20-40), 1:35 PM CST, Scott McGregor (1-2, 7.31 ERA)

Springfield 0 at Tulsa 3

Tulsa pitching stifled Cardinals hitters who managed only three hits on the night. Xavier Scruggs reached base twice with the team's only extra base hit, a double, and a walk. Starter Tim Cooney helped himself with two hits.

Cooney allowed three runs on 10 hits in his six-inning start. The southpaw struck out five and is now 3-3 on the season.

Sunday's game: Springfield (29-30) at Tulsa (29-31), 2:05 pm CST, Seth Blair (2-6, 6.24 ERA)

Palm Beach 6 at Charlotte 2

The Cardinals were down 2-1 going into the eighth and rallied for four runs. Alex Meija led off with a single and would score on a double by Jonathan Rodriguez. David Popkins followed up with a double of his own to plate Rodriguez. Danny Stienstra and Juan Castillo contributed RBI singles in the inning.

Meija had his best game since being promoted from Peoria with three hits and a stolen base. Popkins finished with three hits and two RBI. Rodriguez now has 11 steals after swiping a bag Saturday night.

Starter Cory Baker was tagged for two runs on three hits in six innings. Reliever Jacob Booden earned his first win of his career while Danny Miranda was credited with his first save at Palm Beach.

Sunday's game: Palm Beach (25-36) at Charlotte (27-33), 5:30 pm EST TBD

Peoria 1 vs. Quad Cities 0

Scoreless in the bottom of the ninth, Chiefs' second baseman Jacob Wilson led off to a walk and was advanced to second on a Jordan Walton single. Patrick Wisdom sacrificed Wilson to third with only one out. With Jeremy Schaeffer batting, River Bandits pitcher Gerardo Sanchez threw a wild pitch that allowed Wilson to score and secure the Peoria victory.

Though he did not factor in the decision, Chiefs' starter Joey Cuda was outstanding. Cuda allowed only two hits while striking out eight in seven shutout innings.

Wilson reached base three times with two walks and a single.

Sunday's game: Peoria (32-27) vs. Quad Cities (34-26), 5:00 pm CST, Jake Westbrook (0-0, 0.00 ERA)

DSL Cardinals 6 at DSL Blue Jays 7

Leadoff man Ruben Encarnacion singled to push his average to .333. Magneuris Sierra had the team's only extra base hit, an RBI double.

Starter Frederis Parra struck out five in 5.2 innings of work. Esteban Vallejo not only was charged with a blown save but also was tagged with his first loss. Vallejo allowed three runs in only 2/3 of an inning.

Sunday's game: No game scheduled.
