Cardinals Minor League Notebook: 06/23/13

Saturday brought the 2013 debut of Jordan Swagerty and the Triple-A premiere of Tommy Pham.

Memphis 6 vs. Iowa 2

Brock Peterson and Jamie Romak provided the damage in the Redbirds lineup on Saturday night. Peterson, our Player of the Day, hit his 14th home run, a three-run blast in the fourth, while Romak hit his 17th in the fifth with a runner on.

In his Triple-A debut, Tommy Pham manned centerfield and reached base twice with a double and a walk, Playing right field, Oscar Taveras singled to raise his average to .304.

Scott McGregor picked up his second win with a seven-inning, two run outing.

Sunday's game: Memphis (37-40) vs. Iowa (38-39), 6:05 CT, Carlos Martinez (1-1, 2.45)

Springfield 4 vs. Arkansas 5

Starter Seth Blair allowed three runs on five hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings of work. Lefty Justin Wright was tagged with the loss after yielding two runs in only 2/3 of an inning.

At the plate, Audry Perez was the only Cardinal with two hits. Power hitting Xavier Scruggs showed patience at the plate and collected three walks. Chris Swauger hit his eighth home run of the season.

Sunday's game: Springfield (36-37) vs. Arkansas (36-38), 2:09 CT, Nick Greenwood (2-4, 4.46 ERA)

Palm Beach 6 vs. St. Lucie 5

Nick Longmire had three hits and drove in two to pace the Cardinals offense. Newly-demoted Starlin Rodriguez had two hits and played centerfield. Colin Walsh chipped in two hits as well.

In his Florida State League debut, Tyrell Jenkins had smooth sailing until running into trouble in the fourth. Overall, the right-hander allowed four runs on six hits in 3 1/3 innings. Travis Miller picked up the win after spinning 2 2/3 shutout innings. Dean Kiekhefer picked up his first save.

Sunday's game: Palm Beach (30-41) vs. Fort Myers (47-23), 5:05 CT, Kurt Heyer (1-1, 5.23 ERA)

Peoria 7 at Beloit 9

Jordan Walton had three more hits to push his average above the .300 mark. Nick Martini added a trifecta including a double, as well. Jacob Wilson hit his 12th home run of the season, a solo shot in the fourth.

Joey Cuda was roughed up for six runs and lasted only three innings. Joey Donofrio was tagged with the loss after yielding three runs in 2 1/3 innings of relief.

Sunday's game: Peoria (39-31) at Beloit (45-28), 2:00 CT, Hector Hernandez (4-2, 4.04)

State College 4 at Auburn 6

Starter Andrew Pierce spun three shutout innings before running into trouble in the fourth. He was unable to record an out in the inning and would be charged with two earned runs. Reliever Victor De Leon was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs on six hits in three innings of work.

Carson Kelly hit his first home run at State College, a three-run shot in the fourth. Steven Ramos collected two hits out of the leadoff spot.

Sunday's game: State College (4-2) vs. Jamestown (4-2), 6:05 ET, Juan Bautista (0-1, 3.60 ERA)

Johnson City 8 at Kingsport 1

Starter Jacob Booden struck out four in four shutout innings. Reliever Nick Lomascolo picked up the win after working three innings and striking out five.

At the plate, Kyle Grieshaber had two hits, two RBI, and scored two runs. Ronnierd Garcia and Justin Ringo both chipped in two hits. Second baseman Richy Pedroza showed a good eye with three walks.

Sunday's game: Johnson City (3-0) vs. Danville (2-0), 6:00 ET, Dailyn Martinez (0-0, 0.00 ERA)

GCL Cardinals 5 vs. GCL Mets 0

Five Cardinals pitchers combined to one-hit the Metropolitans. The rehabbing Jordan Swagerty struck out two in his two innings of work. Isaac Silva picked up the win after striking out six in four innings of relief.

Rafeal Medina singled and drove in two runs. Eliezer Alvarez tripled for the team's only extra base hit.

Sunday's game: No game scheduled

DSL Cardinals 5 vs. DSL Pirates2 4

The Cardinals got a run in the bottom of the eighth and Yeison Medina closed the door in the ninth for his third save. Virgilio Encarnacion was tagged with a blown save but picked up the win for the Dominican birds.

Edmundo Sosa singled, doubled, walked, and scored three runs. Joaquin De La Cruz had two hits including a home run.
