Cardinals Minor League Notebook: 07/14/13

Saturday's games were highlighted by late inning comebacks by Memphis and Springfield.

Results from games played Saturday, July 13.

Memphis 5 at Nashville 4

The Redbirds put three runs on the board in the top of the ninth to defeat the Sounds. Player of the Day Chris Swauger had his best Triple-A game with three hits and three RBI. Adron Chambers singled three times and is now hitting .459 in 11 July games. Greg Garcia hit his first home run of the season in the third.

Jorge Rondon was credited with the win after spinning a scoreless inning of relief. Fernando Salas picked up the save. Starter Boone Whiting gave up two runs in 5.2 innings while striking out five.

Sunday's game: Memphis (47-50) at Nashville (33-64), 6:35 CST, Scott McGregor (3-5, 5.70)

Springfield 7 at Northwest Arkansas 4

Down 2-1 going into the seventh, the Cardinals scored four in the seventh and two in the eighth to pull within two games of the .500 mark. Starter Richard Castillo snatched his sixth victory of the season.

At the plate, James Ramsey had two hits including his ninth Double-A home run. Cody Stanley doubled and drove in three runs.

Sunday's game: Springfield (44-46) vs. Arkansas (36-56), 6:09 CST, Jonathan Cornelius (1-3, 5.58)

Palm Beach vs. Brevard County

The game was postponed because of rain. The Cardinals will play a doubleheader against Brevard County on Sunday.

Sunday's game: Palm Beach (42-47) vs. Brevard County (49-38), 4:05 EST, Kurt Heyer (2-2, 4.23)

Peoria 0 at Great Lakes 5

The Chiefs managed only three hits, two by first baseman Jeremy Schaffer. Charlie Tilson singled and is now hitting .288.

Silfredo Garcia's record fell to 2-2 after he allowing one run in 4.2 innings. Reliever Mike Aldrete was roughed up for four runs in only 1.2 innings of relief.

Sunday's game: Peoria (48-41) at Great Lakes (42-51), 2:05 CST, Brad Watson (1-2, 4.02)

State College 6 at Hudson Valley 7

It took an extra inning for the home team to put the Spikes away. State College reliever Jhonny Polanco was charged with the loss after allowing the winning run on his errant throw. Starter Kevin Herget allowed three runs on six hits in four innings of work.

Leadoff man Steven Ramos reached base three times on two singles and a double. Cesar Valera, Bruce Caldwell, and Ronald Castillo had two hits each.

Sunday's game: State College (14-11) at Hudson Valley (15-12), 5:05 EST, Ben O'Shea (3-1, 4.24)

Johnson City 1 at Bristol 2

The Baby Birds tied the game in the top of the ninth but relievers Steve Sabatino and Fernando Baez could not keep the White Sox off the board in the bottom of the inning. Starter Dailyn Martinez gave up only one run on five hits in seven innings.

Leadoff man Vaughn Bryan singled and doubled to push his average to .337. Luis Perez singled twice and stole a base.

Sunday's game: Johnson City (12-10) at Bristol (7-14), 6:00 EST, Hansel De Los Santos (1-1, 5.79)

GCL Cardinals 2 at GCL Marlins 6

Rafael Medina and DeAndre Asbury led the way with a pair of hits each. Asbury's included his fourth double of the season. Chris Rivera doubled and scored a run.

Starter Isaac Silva threw three scoreless but did not factor in the decision. Fidencio Flores was tagged for six runs to pick up his first loss of the season.

Sunday's game: No game scheduled

DSL Cardinals 5, DSL Mets1 1

Catcher Joshua Lopez' two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh turned a 2-1 game into a 4-1 lead. Ruben Encarnacion (two runs), Edmundo Sosa (one run) and Henry Alvarado (double) had two hits each and Joaquin De La Cruz went 3-for-4.

Starter Frederis Parra picked up his fourth win in five decisions, going five scoreless innings on four hits and a walk. Parra fanned seven. Rigobert Urena, Estaban Vallejo and Yeison Medina added four innings of one-hit relief with the only Mets tally unearned.

Sunday's game: No game scheduled
