Cardinals Minor League Notebook: 07/15/13

Jordan Walton led Peoria to a big win on a Sunday during which the system went 3-3.

Memphis 3 at Nashville 2

Memphis' two-run sixth put them on top 3-2 and that would wind up as the final outcome. Adron Chambers put the Redbirds on the board in the fourth with a solo home run, his seventh long ball of the season. Chad Huffman and Jamie Romak both had RBI singles in the sixth.

Starter Scott McGregor was excellent in seven innings for Memphis, giving up two runs (only one earned) on five hits. He struck out six and induced 11 groundouts as he left with his fourth win. Sam Freeman retired three batters in a row in the eighth to pick up a hold and Michael Blazek converted the save, retiring his batters in order in the ninth.

Monday's game: Off for All-Star break. At 48-50, the Redbirds are tied for first place with the Iowa Cubs.

Futures Game: US 4, World 2

Memphis second baseman Kolten Wong went 1-for-2 with a single and a stolen base as the US squad edged the World team, 4-2. Wong's Redbird teammate Oscar Taveras did not suit up for the World due to his ankle injury.

Springfield 6, Arkansas 3

Springfield had a three-run first, scored two in the sixth, and one in the eighth to help them go on and win. Winner Jonathan Cornelius exited after 6 1/3 innings. He gave up two earned runs on five base hits as he walked one and struck out five while coming away with his second victory at Springfield. CMU product Lee Stoppelman got out of the jam in the seventh, retiring two batters without giving up any further damage. He got two more outs in the eighth before Deryk Hooker punched out for the final Traveler for his fifth save.

Cody Stanley and Adam Melker combined for four hits which included four RBI. Luis Mateo hit a two-run RBI single.

Monday's game: Springfield (45-46) vs. Arkansas (47-45), 7:09 CST, RHP Chris Carpenter on a rehab assignment (0-0, 0.00 ERA)

Brevard County 5 at Palm Beach 3 (Game one - seven innings)

Jordan Swagerty gave up two runs in the ninth that lead to a Brevard County walk-off win. Starter Kurt Heyer was shaken by the long ball. In 5 1/3 innings, he gave up six hits on three earned runs, two of which came via the home run.

David Popkins had a two-hit night including a double. Popkins is now hitting .348. Starlin Rodriguez was 2-for-2 as he smacked an RBI double. Jonathan Rodriguez and Danny Stienstra both had RBI singles.

Brevard County at Palm Beach (Game two - postponed)

For the second consecutive night, a game was postponed due to rain in Palm Beach. The Cardinals will play a double-header against Brevard County on Monday.

Peoria 13 at Great Lakes 4

This was a good game until Peoria pounded on Loons pitching for eight runs in the top of the ninth to take the 13-4 lead.

Every player in the Peoria lineup had at least one RBI except Jeremy Schaffer and Ildemaro Vargas. C.J McElroy hit an RBI single, walked and swiped his third base of the season. Charlie Tilson had two hit,s including an RBI single and his eighth stolen base in 2013. Player of the Day Jordan Walton had four RBI for Peoria including a two-run double and two-run home run. Nick Martini and Gerwuins Velazco combined for four RBI.

Brad Watson allowed three runs in six innings and took the win. Zack Russell fanned four in 1 2/3 perfect innings for his second save.

Monday's game: Peoria (49-41) at Great Lakes (42-52), 6:05 CST, Cory Jones RHP (5-1, 1.02 ERA)

Hudson Valley 4, State College 2

Late errors by the State College defense led to two runs for Hudson Valley as they took the home victory.

Jimmy Bosco had a three-hit night including a double. Cesar Valera had an RBI single, his 14th RBI on the season. Steven Ramos had a single, double, walk and stole a base.

Ben O'Shea pitched three scoreless no-hit innings for State College. He walked one and struck out three. Victor De Leon followed with three innings in relief but gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits. Kyle Webb took his first professional loss, though both of his scores were unearned.

Monday's game: State College (14-12) at Hudson Valley (16-12), 11:05 a.m. EST, Willy Paulino RHP (1-1, 1.75 ERA)

Bristol 4, Johnson City 3

Bristol scored three runs in the fifth against struggling Hansel De Los Santos, who pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on eight hits.

Brett Wiley had a nice night at the plate with three hits including a two-run homer pushing his average to .352. Luis Perez had two hits which included a solo home run.

Monday's game: Johnson City (12-11) at Bristol (8-14), 7:00 EST, Blake McKnight RHP (1-0, 1.20 ERA)
