In return, St. Louis received short-season Class-A minor league shortstop Juan Herrera from the Tribe.
Herrera, 20, was batting .275 in 39 games this season for Mahoning Valley of the New York-Penn League (short-season Class-A). He has hit nine doubles with a home run and 11 RBI. The 5-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed hitting native of Bani, Dominican Republic, was signed by Cleveland as a non-drafted free-agent on October 6, 2010.
"Herrera was a highly regarded lower level SS that Indians loved. Made big strides this year with game but just loaded with SS in system," tweeted Indians farm system expert Tony Lastoria of FOX Sports SportsTime Ohio. Prior to the season, Herrera was ranked 93rd on Lastoria's Cleveland top 100 prospects list.
Herrera will remain in the New York-Penn League, assigned to the State College Spikes. Cesar Valera is the State College starter at short, with Bruce Caldwell and 2013 draftee Michael Schultze among other Spikes with experience at the position. Herrera also played some second base and third base in the Indians system.
With the move, the Cardinals' 40-man roster drops to 38.
