5 State College Spikes named NYPL All-Stars

David Washington, Steven Ramos, Ronald Castillo, Cesar Valera and Jimmy Bosco honored by the short-season Class-A league.

On Sunday, the New York-Penn League announced that five State College Spikes players have been named to the National League affiliates' roster for the 2013 All-Star Game. The annual event for the short-season Class-A league will be held on Tuesday, August 13 at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT.

First baseman David Washington and outfielders Steven Ramos and Ronald Castillo were selected to start for the NL, while shortstop Cesar Valera and outfielder Jimmy Bosco were selected as reserves.

Washington is currently tied for the NYPL lead in runs batted in with 33, and his six home runs lead the Spikes. A native of San Diego, CA, the 6-foot-5 slugger is batting .273 this season with 12 doubles.

Ramos led the league in hitting for a period during the month of July, and is currently second in the circuit with a .350 batting average while playing outfield stellar defense. The Tracy, CA native has also notched seven doubles, one triple and 13 RBI on the year.

Castillo has been a big producer for the Spikes, compiling a .342 average with three doubles, one triple, one home run and 15 RBI in 21 games. The native Dominican is currently on the Disabled List with an arm injury. At this point, his participation in the classic must be considered questionable.

Valera has combined slick fielding at short with a solid bat, hitting .290 with 12 doubles, three triples and a home run. The Venezuelan has 21 runs batted in on the year.

Bosco, the lone 2013 Cardinals draft pick selected to the All-Star Game, is hitting .307 with nine doubles, six triples, two homers and 18 RBI. The Granite Bay, CA native was taken by St. Louis in the 13th round of the 2013 MLB Draft. He made history by becoming the first Spikes player ever to hit for the cycle, with a 4-for-5 game on June 26.

Record… and not

While five selections is a Spikes team record, the Cardinals also had five NYPL all-stars last season. 2012 Batavia Muckdogs position players Jesus Montero, Patrick Wisdom and Breyvic Valera were named along with pitchers Tyler Melling and Lee Stoppelman. The Muckdogs had six all-stars in both 2010 and 2011.
