PB's Popkins, Rodriguez, Shaban FSL All-Stars

The Palm Beach Cardinals have three players on the 2013 Florida State League post-season All-Star Team.

The 2013 Florida State League Post-Season All-Star Team was announced on Wednesday. The Palm Beach Cardinals are represented among the 12-team A-Advanced league's 18 best by three players – outfielder David Popkins, first baseman Jonathan Rodriguez and reliever Ronnie Shaban.

Rodriguez and Shaban are repeaters from the mid-season All-Star team, which was essentially two rosters strong. The two were among three Palm Beach players named to represent the FSL South Division in the league's All-Star Game. The other Cardinal, outfielder Stephen Piscotty, has since been promoted to Double-A Springfield.

Shaban, 23, was an injury addition to the mid-season team but has cemented his standing with outstanding work in relief for Palm Beach. His 1-5 record is misleading as the right-hander has 16 saves, fifth-best in the league, along with a 1.76 ERA. Shaban has fanned 39 and walked just 18 in 46 innings over 41 contests. The former Virginia Tech hurler has allowed just one home run this season.

Popkins, 23, has been a consistent offensive force in 2013. The switch-hitting outfielder is second in the league's batting race with a .320 average, sixth in on-base percentage at .375 and slugging at .478 and third in OPS at .852.

In his second tour of the FSL, Rodriguez has been an important run producer. The right-handed hitter is tied for sixth in the league with 16 home runs and fifth in RBI at 69. His batting average of .286 is seventh, his OBP of .366 is 10th, and his SLG of .483 and OPS of .849 are both fourth. Rodriguez also celebrated his 24th birthday on Wednesday.

Popkins and Rodriguez were consecutive Topps FSL Players of the Month for June and July, respectively. Rodriguez was also the system-wide Player of the Month in July as named by both The Cardinal Nation and the St. Louis Cardinals organization.

Dustin Lawley of the Port St. Lucie Mets was named the league's Player of the Year with Justin Nicolino of the Jupiter Hammerheads the Pitcher of the Year. Former MLB player Doug Mientkiewicz of the Fort Myers Miracle was selected as the Manager of the Year.

The FSL all-star squad was selected by field managers, official scorers, and sports writers representing the league's 12 teams.
