The Spikes nearly climbed out of a 5-0 hole only to see the ValleyCats slip past them 5-4 to even up the New York-Penn League Championship series at one game each.
Nick Petree (L, 0-2) yielded a solo shot in the second plus three more that were part of Tri-City's four-run sixth. The right-hander allowed eight hits but did not issue a free pass through 5 2/3 while fanning five. Chase Brookshire permitted both inherited runners to cross plus one of his own on three hits and a walk in 2/3 of a frame.
Jhonny Polanco notched the final two outs in the seventh to leave both of Brookshire's runners aboard. Polanco scattered three hits and a base-on-balls over 2 1/3 with two strikeouts. Jeff Rauh coaxed a pop out to first to strand two of Polanco's runners.
All four of State College's runs crossed in the bottom of the sixth with two of the four being earned. Player of the Day David Washington accounted for half of his team's scores, going 2-for-3 with a free pass, run scored and an RBI. Luis Perez singled twice in four at bats while knocking in one. Four other Spikes had one hit apiece.
