The Salt River Rafters (1-2) lost their second consecutive home contest on Thursday as they were pasted 8-1 by Mesa.
Five tallies in the ninth off John Stilson (Tor) and Matt Ramsey (TB) blew open a close game. The Blue Jays' number one prospect Aaron Sanchez started for the Rafters, facing off against lefty Matt Purke (Nationals). Both pitchers tossed the first three frames with Sanchez departing up 1-0 thanks to an unearned run in the second.
Southpaw Mike Montgomery (TB) took the loss when he yielded three tallies on five hits in 1 1/3. St. Louis' Lee Stoppelman threw a clean eighth although his control was a bit off. Stoppelman sandwiched two free passes around a foul tip strikeout to open the frame but induced the Angels' Taylor Lindsey, the 37th pick in the 2010 draft, to hit into a 4-6-3 double play.
James Ramsey provided nearly all of his squad's offense, going 3-for-3 with a double and a walk while scoring Salt River's only run. The centerfielder beat out a grounder to second for a two-out single in the second, advanced to third via a double and raced home on a fielding error by the Solar Sox' third baseman. Ramsey was stranded at first after singling with one out in the fourth and suffered the same fate after doubling to right to kick off the ninth.
Stephen Piscotty batted fifth in front of Ramsey but was unable to contribute to the cause. The right fielder was hitless in four at bats with two strikeouts.
Friday's game: vs. Peoria (1-2), 12:35 pm MT, RHP Brandon Maurer (5-8, 6.30 ERA in 2013 MLB) at RHP Sam Gaviglio (4-1, 2.27 ERA in 2013).
