Cardinals prospect interview: Rob Kaminsky

The St. Louis Cardinals' first-round draft pick, a left-handed pitcher from New Jersey, speaks about his first professional season.

18-year-old Rob Kaminsky was chosen by the St. Louis Cardinals with their first-round selection in the 2013 draft, 28th overall. The left-handed pitcher was their second pick after the 19th overall spot, a compensatory selection, was used on Marco Gonzales.

On the Gulf Coast League Cardinals rookie-level club, the Engelwood Cliffs, New Jersey native joined fellow highly-touted hurlers Gonzales, Steven Farinaro and Mike Mayers and held his own.

Though he has yet to receive his first career win, it is more a function of the fact his innings were held in check than any question about his capabilities. In 22 innings over eight outings, including five starts, Kaminsky's ERA was 3.68. He fanned 28 and walked nine, giving up just one home run.

Perhaps tiring a bit, Kaminsky allowed eight of his nine runs in his final two outings, as he took two of his three losses. Still, overall, it was a very solid introduction.

During the recently-completed instructional league, Kaminsky spoke about his pre-draft activity, some prejudices against him and his first summer as a professional baseball player.
