Cardinals prospect interview: C.J. McElroy

The St. Louis Cardinals' speedy outfield prospect discusses his injury-interrupted 2013 season.

Now 20 years of age, outfielder C.J. McElroy finished his 2013 back in the St. Louis Cardinals instructional league. The primary goal was to get more reps, making up for lost time after earlier missing two months with a foot injury.

After just five games with Class A Peoria, McElroy was sidelined. The right-handed hitter spent much of the next 60 days at the Cardinals facility in Jupiter, Florida working his way back.

McElroy returned to the Peoria Chiefs in time to play 53 more games. Overall, he logged 58 hits in 58 contests, but batted just .240 and stole just eight bases in 16 attempts. A natural centerfielder, the speedster played all three positions this summer.

During the recently-completed instructs, McElroy spoke about his 2013 and hopes for the future.
