A three-run fifth sunk the Rafters (11-11) who fell to the Solar Sox 5-4 on the road.
Starter Grayson Garvin (TB) took a 4-2 advantage into the fifth but two singles sandwiched around a strikeout brought Colorado's Craig Sitton into the game. Sitton (BS, 1) (L, 0-2) gave up an infield single to third that jammed the sacks full. A 4-3 ground out brought in one run before a bases-clearing double yielded the lead.
A delay driven by lightning, thunder and brief, but heavy rain that engulfed Hohokam Stadium just as he took the mound did not bother Dean Kiekhefer in the least. The lefty tossed a clean sixth and seventh, retiring all six batters faced on two ground outs, three line outs and a pop out to short. Kiekhefer efficiently threw 17 pitches, 12 for strikes.
Stephen Piscotty singled and scored his squad's first run of the game that was part of Salt River's three second-inning tallies. Piscotty began the frame by smashing a sharp liner to center and advancing to second on a missed catch error by Mesa's left fielder. A single moved the outfielder to third before back-to-back free passes pushed the right fielder across. Piscotty lined out to center the next inning, popped out to second with the bases loaded in the fifth and grounded out 5-3 with a runner on second for the second out in the seventh.
