Cardinals prospect interview: Sam Gaviglio

The St. Louis Cardinals right-handed prospect made six starts in the Arizona Fall League.

Sam Gaviglio would almost certainly prefer to be a major league pitcher rather than the answer to a trivia question. There is still time to make that change, however.

Yet so far, the 23-year-old right-hander may be most known for having been the very first hurler selected by the pitching-savvy St. Louis Cardinals in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft. The Oregon native was taken in the fifth round, 170th overall.

From Gaviglio's draft, Kolten Wong is already in the majors and Michael Wacha, taken a year later, is also with St. Louis. In contrast, because of health problems, the former Oregon State star has not advanced beyond A-Advanced Palm Beach and threw less than 50 innings this past summer.

With Gaviglio now healthy and ready for more work, the Cardinals organization made the decision for him to start in the Arizona Fall League.

For the Salt River Rafters, Gaviglio pitched 27 2/3 innings over six starts. He gave up 11 earned runs on 25 hits for a 3.58 ERA. The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder walked eight and struck out 21 while holding opposing hitters to a collective .250 average. His ground out to fly out ratio was a solid 2.24 to 1.

According to PITCH/fx data from his October 30 start, Gaviglio showed five pitches – fastball, sinker, changeup, slider and curve. His sinker was by far his predominant offering, maxing out at 92.1 mph.

In this exclusive interview, Gaviglio discusses his ups and downs to date, with his most recent positive experience in the AFL.
