Farm director Gary LaRocque sets 2014 table

St. Louis Cardinals Director of Player Development Gary LaRocque discusses the upcoming season in an exclusive interview.

Gary LaRocque has been in baseball for 38 years, including the last six with the St. Louis Cardinals. He has pretty much seen it all – from playing to managing, scouting, running scouting and player development with the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets.

Yet in his six years reporting to Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak, LaRocque had never participated in Winter Warm-Up – until this past weekend. Though his current title is relatively new, Director of Player Development, the 60-year-old has effectively served as farm director since 2012.

In that role, LaRocque presented to attendees of Winter Warm-Up on Sunday. I spoke with him afterward.

In the following audio interview, exclusive to subscribers to The Cardinal Nation, LaRocque recaps 2013, then discusses a number of new additions to the system for 2014. He touches on several positional logjams and key programs including Cardinal Excellence (off-season conditioning) and Cardinal Core (character building).
