Cards Dominican Winter League season recap

Final results from five St. Louis Cardinals prospects that competed in the 2013-14 Dominican Winter League.

Aguilas Cibaenas –

Regular Season Record: 31-19, tied with Escogido for first
Round Robin Record: 7-11
Round Robin Standing: Fourth, Four games back and 2 ½ out of Finals slot

- Jose Almarante: Almarante's only winter ball appearance was on December 13th. The righty began the seventh with his squad trailing 5-1 and allowed three of four batters faced to reach on a throwing error by the third baseman, single and hit batsman. Almarante was charged with an unearned tally when the runner subsequently crossed after the Haitian native's departure.

- Angel Castro: The 31-year-old veteran, the opening day starter on October 18th, made eight starts in all during the regular season. He led the league with a 1.29 ERA (2.87) and notched 37 strikeouts, 63 ground outs and 23 fly outs during that span. Castro was not as sharp in his four postseason starts, compiling a 2.38 ERA (4.83 FIP) and 1.24 WHIP in 22 2/3 frames. After posting an almost 3:1 GO/AO ratio during the regular season, that figure dropped to less than 2:1 during the round robin tournament. Further, his walk rate went from 2.4 to 4.4 every nine innings. Overall, Castro held the opposition to a .224 batting average with 24 walks and 48 strikeouts in 71 1/3 innings.

- Jermaine Curtis: Curtis played in 34 of his team's 50 games during the regular season, 31 of them starts. He split time almost equally between second and third base, 13 starts versus 10 starts respectively. The 26-year-old got almost as much time in right (seven starts) as third, a position he has not played since 2011 when Curtis saw action in right three times for Double-A Springfield. Offensively, Curtis' best stretch was a span of 11 games over three weeks in late November through mid-December where he batted over .400 with an OPS over 1.000. Those numbers skidded to a .143 average and .343 OPS in his last four games, before dropping to an .091 batting average during the postseason.

- Carlos Martinez: Martinez' time with Aguilas spanned six starts over the team's last month of action. After not pitching in a game since October 30th, he eased back into action by tossing 6 1/3 innings in two regular season starts on December 14th and 20th. Martinez followed that up with four postseason starts totaling 17 1/3 frames. The 22-year-old finished his winter season with his best outing, a superb seven frames of shut out ball. Martinez faced only 24 batters during that span, erasing one of his four hits yielded as well as his only free pass issued on two double-play balls. Overall, the righty fanned 26 batters in 23 2/3 with 34 ground outs and nine fly outs. He compiled a 3.04 ERA, 2.19 FIP, 1.10 WHIP and held the opposition to a .234 batting average. - Audry Perez: Perez did well in limited action, posting a line of .341/.372/.512/.884 in 13 games. Nine of his 11 starts were behind the plate where he backed up the Royals' Francisco Pena. Perez was used sporadically with gaps of 10 days, two weeks and a month between playing time. That ‘pattern' continued in the postseason where he started on December 28th, the second game of the round-robin tournament, then did not start again until he caught Martinez' final start on January 15th by which time Aguilas had been eliminated. Defensively, the 25-year-old committed two errors.
