20 minutes with the Cards' scouting director

If you had 20 minutes to ask St. Louis Cardinals Director of Scouting Dan Kantrovitz anything, what would it be? Find out what Brian Walton did in that situation.

Dan Kantrovitz is preparing for his third draft heading the St. Louis Cardinals scouting department. The 35-year-old took the assignment in December 2011 upon the departure of Jeff Luhnow to the Houston Astros.

We began our 20 minutes together by looking back upon his first two drafts. Dan talked about the strategies of how and when to select players, addressing common questions such as positional focus versus best athlete, early picks versus late picks, budget management and more with an eye toward June 2014.

The scouting director - recently named one of the top 10 general manager candidates in MLB - also discusses his over two dozen scouts - their deployment, management and training and development.
