Where will TCN top 40 Cards prospects report?

Our top 40 St. Louis Cardinals prospects for 2014 designated by which spring camp they are invited.

Now that the St. Louis Cardinals have disclosed their entire spring roster plans:

Non-roster invitees to Major League camp
STEP Camp
Regular minor league camp

… it is time to look back at how The Cardinal Nation top prospect list for 2014 fared in terms of their camp assignments.

Here are the top 40 raw counts by camp/type. To the right are the total populations, including top 40 and non-top 40 prospect players.

Spring distribution Top 40   Camp total Top 40 %
MLB camp - 40-man 10   39 25.6%
Non-roster invitees 10   18 55.6%
STEP camp 14   24 58.3%
Regular minors camp 6   131 4.6%
Total 40

As you can see, 10 members of the top 40 are among the 39 players already on the 40-man roster. Another 10 top prospects are among the 18 non-roster invitees to big league camp.

Not surprisingly, the STEP Camp, or early minor league camp, has the highest concentration of top prospects with 14 of the 24 invitees, or almost 60 percent. At the other end of the spectrum, just six of the top 40 have regular minor league camp as their initial destination.

Gast
The latter group includes two top 20 players. Both are former big-league camp-invited pitchers coming off shoulder surgery – Tyrell Jenkins and John Gast. Jenkins has yet to pitch above Palm Beach while Gast started for St. Louis before being injured and removed from the 40-man roster.

Other minor league camp invitees among our top 40 prospects are 2013 pitching draftees Ian McKinney (fifth round) and Nick Petree (ninth round). The final two are overseas youngsters, shortstop Edmundo Sosa and catcher-turned-pitcher Fernando Baez.

The next view is the top 40 by camp assignment and position with top 40 ranking for each player.
