Cards minor league camp is open for business

St. Louis Cardinals minor league pitchers and catchers are already in camp with position players next.

Though the 58 players currently in St. Louis Cardinals major league camp are not playing a game today, Tuesday, March 4, it is a big day for 82 minor league pitchers from the organization. Having reported to spring training camp on Monday, the group is having its first official workout.

They will be joined in Jupiter, Florida by 75 position players on Wednesday, March 5, with the entire group holding its first workout on Thursday. To be accurate, 24 of these players were already in Florida, having participated in the organization's Spring Training Early Program, or STEP Camp.

If you are doing the math - and I know some are - you may be confused by the total of 157. Back on January 31, you received an exclusive first view of the 155 players to be invited to minor league camp.

Here are the changes that occurred to get from 155 then to 157 now:

Minus 2: Right-handed pitchers Kurt Heyer and Boone Whiting were later invitees to major league camp.

Plus 2: Dominican Summer League hurlers Estarlin Arias and Fernando Gonzalez are continuing their rehab program in Jupiter, listed among camp participants.

Plus 1: 2013 Gulf Coast Cardinals left-hander Stalyn Lopez was added to minor league camp.

Plus 1: Right-handed pitcher Jordan Swagerty was reassigned from major league camp to minor league camp on Sunday.

For completeness, here is the entire list of 157, with the 24 STEP campers denoted as (ST). Note they are alphabetical within position groups:
