Cards shed nine in first major spring cuts

The St. Louis Cardinals optioned out three players and reassigned six others to minor league camp on Monday.

In their first major cuts of the spring, the St. Louis Cardinals announced following Monday's game that they have sent nine players from their Major League camp to minor league camp.

40-man roster players optioned to Triple-A Memphis are pitcher Angel Castro and outfielders Mike O'Neill and Rafael Ortega. Non-roster invitees re-assigned to minor league camp are pitchers Kurt Heyer and Boone Whiting, infielder Patrick Wisdom and catchers Carson Kelly, Casey Rasmus and Cody Stanley.

The Cardinals re-assigned pitcher Marco Gonzales to minor league camp on Sunday and have added newly-signed infielder Aledmys Diaz. As a result of the moves, 37 members of the 40-man roster and 12 NRIs remain in camp, for 49 players in total.
