Cards welcome 89 to extended spring training

From now until June, a group of minor leaguers will keep working in Florida on improving their game.

After the St. Louis Cardinals major league club and the four full-season minor league affiliates broke camp, leaving Jupiter, Florida behind, the minor leaguers who remained provide the core of players for the organization's annual extended spring training. The annual camp began the same day as the regular minor league season – on Thursday, April 3 - and will continue until early June.

Many others have joined them and yet others will soon be following. They include every player still in the organization that suited up for one of the United States-based clubs in 2013. Joining them will be 14 players that competed in the 2013 Dominican Summer League, including shortstop Edmundo Sosa, who was already in the US participating in the March's minor league spring training camp.

When all are on hand, extended spring training camp will consist of 89 players. Currently, 77 are in house - 67 active and 10 temporarily sidelined by injury.

The group includes six players that ended last season with full-season clubs, making up what in essence appears to be a taxi squad. More details on them can be found in this article.

Five invitees are members of The Cardinal Nation 2014 top 40 prospect list – pitchers Rob Kaminsky (5), Ian McKinney (28) and Fernando Baez (38) plus infielders Sosa (32) and Oscar Mercado (22).

The final 12 of the 89 did not arrive at extended spring training immediately when camp officially opened. (Excluded from the 2013 DSL 14 along with Sosa is catcher Sergio Ripoll, who was rehabbing in Jupiter during minor league camp.) These 12 academy players are first participating in a mini-camp at the Cardinals facility in the Dominican that began earlier this week. They will join the others in Jupiter on April 14.

Of course, those on the disabled lists at any of the full-season clubs may participate in daily EST games as a tune-up, as well. One such current example is St. Louis relief pitcher Jason Motte. Injured top pitching prospects Jordan Swagerty and Tyrell Jenkins are reportedly still six to eight weeks from being ready for activation, but will almost certainly pitch ahead of time in EST.

The 2014 extended spring training participants follow, with their end-of-season 2013 assignments noted.

News and notes

You may notice a new name among the pitchers. That is Steven De La Cruz. Check back for an update to this section of the article once I can confirm his background.

Four players are noted as "Not in camp." They include two suspended players, pitcher Andrew Pierce and infielder Brett Wiley. Pitcher Kyle Webb was not in spring camp, but Mike Aldrete was, having pitched in four spring games, most recently on March 21. More information will be provided on these players as I receive it.

In a number of cases with the injured players, nine of whom are pitchers, you can go their player pages to learn more about their situations. For new injuries, I will work to get specifics. Among the nine, only Victor De Leon and Max Foody had pitched in minor league spring training games.

All of the extended spring training players will be conceivably under consideration when openings occur at Peoria. If they still remain in mid-June, they will be assigned to one of the short-season clubs in State College, Johnson City and in the Gulf Coast League. Some of the academy EST invitees may return to play in the 2014 DSL, but most are expected to earn jobs in the US.

However, be advised that in terms of roster classification, all 89 EST players will remain on their 2013 team rosters here until officially assigned to a 2014 club.
