Cardinals' Rodriguez on new extended arrivals

14 players from the 2013 Dominican Summer League have reported to the St. Louis Cardinals extended spring training camp. The organization's international director Moises Rodriguez highlights them.

Today, Monday, April 14, marks the first day of the St. Louis Cardinals 2014 extended spring training camp (EST) that includes the entire squad of 89 players.

As noted in this earlier article, there were three waves of players that make up this year's EST contingent. The first group are those who did not make a full-season club and remained behind after minor league spring training camp. The second included all players who competed last season on any of the Cardinals US-based clubs, primarily Johnson City and the Gulf Coast League Cardinals.

The final group spent last season playing for the Dominican Summer League Cardinals. There are 14 players in that population. However, two had arrived earlier this spring – shortstop Edmundo Sosa and rehabbing catcher Sergio Ripoll. The other 12 players prepared for their US arrival by participating in a mini-camp at the Cardinals Dominican academy that began at the start of this month.

Here are the 14 by age and position. Most are expected to remain in the US and play on one of the short-season clubs. The GCL should be the most common, though not exclusive destination.
