Cardinals Minor League Notebook: 04/27/14

On Saturday night, the Cardinals system picked up three victories in four games. Cory Jones led Palm Beach.

Memphis 0 at Round Rock 2

Just like their big league counterparts, the Redbirds struggled to get runners across the plate on Saturday. Memphis managed only five singles against former University of Missouri standout Nick Tepesch.

Lefthander Tim Cooney was good enough to have earned a win by allowing two runs on six hits while striking out eight in seven innings of work. The had-luck loser ended the night having thrown 98 pitches, 66 of them for strikes.

Sunday's game: Memphis (11-11) at Round Rock (12-10), 1:05 CT, Zach Petrick (0-0, 4.50 ERA)

Springfield 2 at Arkansas 0

Starter Kyle Hald made it only 4 2/3 innings but set his Cardinals teammates up for the victory. Ryan Sherriff picked up the win after spinning 1 1/3 innings of relief. Dean Kiekhefer notched his fifth save on the young season.

James Ramsey and David Popkins paced the offense with a pair of hits. Jonathan Rodriguez and Curt Smith drove in a run each.

Sunday's game: Springfield (12-10) at Arkansas (8-14), 2:10 CT, Seth Blair (1-0, 3.09 ERA)

Palm Beach 9 at Fort Myers 4

Anthony Garcia had a monster night with four hits that pushed his batting average up 40 points. Jacob Wilson and Breyvic Valera did most of the damage with a pair of RBI each. Wilson collected a single, double, and scored a run. Charlie Tilson, Alex Mejia, and Jesus Montero each had a multi-hit game.

Cory Jones earned his first victory of the year with six shutout innings. The right-hander yielded just two hits, both singles, and four walks. Our Player of the Day fanned six.

Sunday's game: Palm Beach (10-12) at Fort Myers (12-10), 4:05 ET, Kyle Helisek (0-1, 2.04 ERA)

Peoria 3 vs. Quad Cities 2

Michael Schulze collected three singles from the ninth spot in the Chiefs' lineup. Juan Herrera reached base three times with two hits and a walk. Steve Bean did most of the heavy lifting with two RBI.

Joe Scanio picked up the win after tossing 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Kyle Barraclough was credited with his first save.

Sunday's game: Peoria (13-7) vs. Quad Cities (9-12), 2:00 CT, Chase Brookshire (0-2, 11.70 ERA)
