Scheduled to start for Peoria on Sunday, Petree is instead packing for a return to Jupiter, Florida. There he will apparently step into the Palm Beach Cardinals rotation spot vacated by injured Cory Jones.
Before the season, the right-hander was named The Cardinal Nation's 34th-ranked prospect in the system. In 2013, Petree was TCN's State College Spikes Starting Pitcher of the Year after posting a 1.62 ERA. He finished just 4 1/3 innings short of taking the New York-Penn League's ERA title.
Replacing Petree at Peoria and starting on Sunday will be The Cardinal Nation's fifth-ranked Cardinals prospect, left-hander Rob Kaminsky. Taken 28th overall in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, the New Jersey native pitched for the Gulf Coast League Cardinals last season.
During spring training, Kaminsky allowed just two earned runs in 13 innings. The 19-year-old struck out nine, but walked six. He remained in Florida during April and continued to pitch in extended spring training camp.
Born on September 2, 1994, Kaminsky is the youngest Chief by four days compared to his new rotation mate and TCN's no. 7 prospect in the system, Alex Reyes. The will both be throwing to catcher Carson Kelly, also 19 years of age, TCN's no. 9 Cardinals prospect.
The Cardinals have not yet announced their Palm Beach move to accommodate Petree. However, right-hander Will Anderson joined the Florida State League club's roster in time to pitch a three-inning save Saturday night and could be returning to extended spring camp.
Bonus for TCN subscribersLast month, in an exclusive interview with The Cardinal Nation, Petree talked about his progress since he was selected by the Cardinals in the ninth round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft.
