Bilardello: State of the Palm Beach Cardinals

The manager of the St. Louis Cardinals A-Advanced affiliate discusses the 2014 season to date.

OK, so it is not nearly as formal as a Presidential address, but is usually always worth listening with a leader speaks. Such was the case this week when the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals Class A-Advanced affiliate in Palm Beach answered a series of questions about his club and players.

Through 40 games, the Cardinals are fourth in the 12-team Florida State League in run scoring and are sixth in ERA. Yet, Palm Beach is in sixth (last) place in its tightly-bunched division, 5 ½ games out with an 18-22 record.

Not unlike their St. Louis parent, the Beach Birds have struggled with inconsistent hitting and a bullpen that has not always been dependable. Bilardello is still trying to come up with the best batting order to find that elusive consistency.

In this interview, held just before his top starter, Marco Gonzales, and reliever Corey Baker were promoted to Double-A Springfield, the manager discusses all of the above and more.

Coming soon: In the near future, look for Palm Beach interviews with Gonzales, outfielder Charlie Tilson and reliever Sam Tuivailala as well as a feature with coach Ricky Meinhold.
