There are many coaches working at the St. Louis Cardinals extended spring training camp in Jupiter, Florida. They include pitching and hitting coaches for the short-season minor league clubs as well as the managers of the three teams. Gulf Coast League Cardinals manager Steve Turco provides general camp leadership.
Manager Oliver Marmol, the current Kissell Award winner for excellence in player development, runs the Red team. That includes a number of the players who competed for his State College Spikes last season and many from the 2013 Johnson City Cardinals as well. We have already seen a number of the Red players promoted to Peoria, such as Rob Kaminsky and most recently, Brandon Lee and Michael Holback.
The third skipper, Johnson City Cardinals manager Johnny Rodriguez, manages the least experienced group. Most either were members of Turco's GCL squad last summer or played on the 2013 Dominican Summer League Cardinals. These players are listed as the White team on paper, but are often split into two squads, the other being called the Blue team, as Rodriguez explains.
In the following interview, Rodriguez identifies a number of the younger standout players he has seen during this extended spring training.[MEDIA=1318142]
