As the 30 Major League organizations prepare for the 2014 First-Year Player Draft, which gets underway on Thursday, June 5, scouts remain on the road getting final looks at prospective picks. Right along with them is Scout.com's National Baseball Analyst Kiley McDaniel.
To get an understanding of which kinds of players the St. Louis Cardinals may be seriously considering, as well as some names of potential draftees, McDaniel is the best person I know to ask. From outside the organization, that is, but of course, the Cardinals aren't talking.
In fact, as I reached Kiley this weekend, he was in his car, crisscrossing the state of Florida following the various top young players, whether at showcases, big college programs or local high schools.
Along with the Cardinals overall posture, McDaniel discusses six players he thinks may be connected to the Cardinals, including one that is a fresh new rumor. They are listed with McDaniel's Top 289 ranking, home state and college commitment. Note that all six are high schoolers.
For reference, St. Louis has four picks in the top 71 this year. Their own first and second-rounders are at number 27 and 68. They also have the 34th selection as compensation for the loss of Carlos Beltran and the 71st pick via round two of the Competitive Balance lottery.

Following the draft, we will check back with Kiley on some of the top athletes taken by St. Louis.
