25 on State College Spikes Working Roster

The St. Louis Cardinals have assigned 25 players to the State College Spikes with more on the way.

The State College Spikes of the New York-Penn League cannot open the season with more than 35 players on its active roster. Though 23 players are already working out with the team and the parent St. Louis Cardinals announced the signing of two more from the draft class of 2014, even more will arrive before the New York-Penn League opener on Friday.

In other words, there will be more roster churn, so do not consider the following absolute. But it is a first official workout roster for the 2014 Spikes.

Looking at the makeup of the group, two of the 25 tentative Spikes are players who finished 2013 with State College and have not played elsewhere since. Seven others are from Johnson City's Appalachian League club last year. Seven more are up from the Gulf Coast League.

Five others have received short trials in 2014 at either Class-A Peoria or A-Advanced Palm Beach but have stepped back to regroup and move ahead.

One is a 2013 draftee unable to play last season due to injury. Another is a free agent signee yet to suit up in official action as a Cardinal.

The final two are 2014 draftees. Their signings were just announced on Tuesday so they may not yet be with the team.

That makes 25. Here is the list by position, followed by specifics.

State College (25)
P P C 1B
Booden Grana A DeLeon Stone
F Baez Lomascolo (L) L Cruz
Bautista Barkley Ehrlich
Anderson D Martinez
McKinney (L) Rauh
Farinaro J Lucas
Nielsen Perdomo
C Rivera Pina R Medina Vigo
Seferina (5)     Wick
      Thompson (8)

NYPL veterans (2)

New York-Penn League veterans include the battery of pitcher Jacob Booden and catcher Alex DeLeon.

Johnson City promotions (7)

Those last with Johnson City include pitchers Fernando Baez, Kyle Grana, Nick Lomascolo, Dailyn Martinez and Luis Perdomo. The others are outfielders Brian Vigo and Rowan Wick.

Gulf Coast promotions (7)

Two highly-thought of pitchers from the 2013 draft class who spent last summer in the Gulf Coast League, Ian McKinney and Steven Farinaro, are also among the 25. So is underrated hurler Dewin Perez.

Most of the initial Spikes' tentative infield were also 2013 GCL Cards. They include catcher Luis Cruz, second baseman Chris Rivera, shortstop Leobaldo Pina and third baseman Rafael Medina.

2014 Bouncebackers (5)

Between last season and now, this group of players already either had fill-in roles or trials with Palm Beach or Peoria, the next two rungs in the minor league hierarchy.

They include pitchers Will Anderson (Palm Beach), Josh Lucas (Palm Beach) and Jeff Rauh (Peoria), catcher Adam Ehrlich (Palm Beach) and first baseman Jake Stone (Peoria).

2014 Draft Class (2)

The two 2014 draftees are second baseman Darren Seferina, the fifth-rounder, and eighth round pick, outfielder Nick Thompson. Seferina came from Miami Dade College South while Thompson last played at William & Mary.

Other first-timers (2)

Right-hander Trey Nielsen was the Cardinals' 30th rounder last summer from the University of Utah and will suit up as a Spike in his first official professional action. Another right-handed pitcher, Jeff Barkley, was signed as a free agent in April. He competed last spring at Pfeiffer University.

Other draftees rumored on the way

Among other 2014 draftees informally expected to be joining State College include fourth-round left-handed pitcher Austin Gomber, sixth-round shortstop Andrew Sohn, ninth-round right-handed pitcher Daniel Poncedeleon, 20th-round outfielder Collin Radack and 25th-round outfielder Landon Beck.

They are not included on the roster view above since they are not yet official. Likely a passed physical exam is a final gate.

Who is where, again?

The State College roster page here on the main site is not yet accurate. I will not move other players until their new rosters are announced.

Also, I am planning to refresh the roster matrix on Wednesday, but it will not be completely accurate until all three short-season clubs are set. That could be another week.

Of course, more signings will be announced every few days.

Rotation Update

Dewin Perez has been announced as the starter for the season opener Friday at Williamsport and Steven Farinaro will start the home opener Saturday. Luis Perdomo will also be in the rotation.
