Cardinals Minor League Notebook: 06/16/14

Oscar Taveras is trying to convince the Cardinals his time back at Memphis should be short. The system went 2-2 on Sunday.

Memphis 7 vs. Reno 2

The Redbirds jumped out to an early lead and held on for the victory. Oscar Taveras appears to be finding his stroke with two hits, including his eighth home run of the season. Stephen Piscotty reached base five times with two hits and three walks. Also, Piscotty drove in three runs.

Tim Cooney allowed two runs on six hits with six strikeouts in seven innings of work. Eric Fornataro and Jose Almarante each contributed a shutout inning of relief.

Monday's game: Memphis (34-36) vs. Reno (39-31), 7:05 CDT, Zach Petrick (3-3, 4.77 ERA)

Springfield 3 at Tulsa 4 (10 innings)

The Cardinals scored twice in the eighth to eventually force extra frames. Joe Donofrio was charged with the loss after allowing the eventual winning run to reach base in the bottom of the tenth. Starter Sam Gaviglio spun six solid innings but did not factor in the decision.

Having just arrived back in Springfield, Mike O'Neill singled twice out of his customary leadoff spot. James Ramsey had two hits and is now batting .308 on the season.

Monday's game: Springfield (33-36) at Tulsa (34-26), 7:05 CDT, Jonathan Cornelius (6-5, 3.82 ERA)

Palm Beach

The Beach Birds were off on Sunday for the final day of the Florida State League All-Star Break.

Monday's game: Palm Beach (34-33) vs. Jupiter (27-40), 6:35 EDT, Nick Petree (3-2, 1.76 ERA)

Peoria 6 vs. Clinton 5

After hitting his 10th home run in the sixth, Mason Katz led off the bottom of the tenth. Instead of looking for help, Katz decided to go ahead and end the game and give the Chiefs the victory. The former LSU Tiger launched the ball over the centerfield fence off reliever Rafael Pineda.

Steve Bean had two hits including his second home run of the season, a solo shot. Justin Ringo singled twice and doubled to raise his average to .447.

Reliever Brandon Lee picked up his first win of the season with a scoreless 10th. Starter Arturo Reyes was charged with four runs on nine hits in his six innings on the mound.

Monday's game: Peoria (37-32) starts its all-star break. The Midwest League All-Star Game will be played on Tuesday night.

State College 2 at Williamsport 8

State College was shut out until the ninth when Nick Thompson did something about it. The Spikes' left fielder hit a two-run blast for his first professional home run. The Spikes only other hit was a single off the bat of Rowan Wick.

Ian McKinney was charged with the loss after allowing two runs on four hits in five innings. Reliever Jeff Barkley lasted only a third of an inning but was charged with five earned runs.

Monday's game: State College (2-1) vs. Williamsport (1-2), 7:05 EDT, Dailyn Martinez (0.00 ERA)
