Gulf Coast League Cardinals Working Roster

The St. Louis Cardinals may have as many as 35 players at the rookie-level Gulf Coast League to open the season.

With State College already underway for the 2014 short season and a preliminary roster from Johnson City available, we can ascertain a tentative roster for the Gulf Coast League Cardinals, as well.

The following group of players consist of 28 who participated in extended spring training camp that are not on State College or Johnson City plus seven signed 2014 draftees whose team assignments have been announced to be the GCL.

With a maximum active roster size of 35 in short-season ball, all of these players could conceivably be accommodated on the opening day roster of the 2014 Gulf Coast League Cardinals this Friday, but that will likely not happen.

In addition to potential moves up to Johnson City, the total should drop because several players will probably open on the disabled list. Still, the GCL roster will include the vast majority of these 35 players.

The 2014 draftees include first-rounders Luke Weaver, who signed late Monday and Jack Flaherty, who was official on Tuesday. Other new Cardinals are third baseman Julian Barzilli (31st round) and four pitchers - second-rounder Ronnie Williams, Tyler Dunnington from the 28th round, 38th-round pick Sasha Kuebel and 40th-rounder Davis Ward. Kuebel is the lone left-hander of the group.

Eight of the tentative GCL Cardinals have come over from the Dominican Republic academy for their first official play in the US. They include shortstop Edmundo Sosa, catcher Joshua Lopez, pitcher Ramon Santos and outfielder Magneuris Sierra. Sosa and Santos were The Cardinal Nation's DSL Cardinals Player and Starting Pitcher of the Year for 2013, respectively.

The Cardinals have also signed two free agent outfielders this week, Nebraska's Michael Pritchard and Southeast Missouri State's Derek Gibson. Neither have been formally announced by the organization as of yet so their assignments are not yet known. Though they would be old for the league, given there are only three flychasers among the above 35, the two could also be in the initial GCL mix.

The 2014 GCL Cards staff is led by returning manager Steve Turco. He is assisted by pitching coach Darwin Marrero, back for another season, and new hitting coach Kleininger Teran. Teran, a former Cardinals farmhand, moved up from the Dominican Summer League, replacing Jobel Jimenez, now with Peoria.
