Cardinals Minor League Notebook: 06/22/14

Catcher Carson Kelly had a monster night for Peoria, finishing with three doubles and five RBI. The system went 7-1 on Saturday with six of the wins coming on the road.

Memphis 5 at Las Vegas 11

The Redbirds jumped out to 3-0 lead in the top of the first but the 51's put up two in the bottom of the frame and five more in the third. Tim Cooney was charged with eight runs in four innings.

Stephen Piscotty singled twice and scored two runs. Former UNLV star Xavier Scruggs hit a two-run shot in the first inning. Pete Kozma had a two-run blast in the seventh. Another hometown boy, Tommy Pham, had a pinch hit double.

Sunday's game: Memphis (37-39) at Las Vegas (45-31), 2:05 CT, Boone Whiting (0-5, 4.65)

Springfield 5 at Arkansas 4

Mike O'Neill got the game started right for the visitors with a home run, his first of the season. Curt Smith finished with three hits and an RBI. Cody Stanley hit his seventh home run of the season in the sixth inning.

Starter Jonathan Cornelius was tagged with four runs in six innings and did not factor in the decision. Reliever Ryan Sheriff was credited with his second win of the season with one shutout inning. Lee Stoppelman picked up his third save.

Sunday's game: Springfield (36-39) at Arkansas (37-38), 2:10 CT, Kurt Heyer (3-3, 4.82 ERA)

Palm Beach 2 at Charlotte 1

Leadoff man Charlie Tilson is putting together a tremendous season and Saturday just continued his breakout campaign. The centerfielder had two hits including a solo home run and had both of the Cardinals' RBI. Shortstop Alex Mejia singled twice and scored.

Kyle Helisek allowed only one run in his seven-inning outing but did not factor in the decision. Reliever Kyle Barraclough picked up the win while Dixon Llorens was credited with his fifth save.

Sunday's game: Palm Beach (39-33) at Bradenton (38-34), 5:05 ET, Nick Petree (3-2, 1.96 ERA)

Peoria 9 at Quad Cities 2

Carson Kelly led the charge with three doubles and five RBI. Before this outburst, he had only six doubles all season. Luis Perez doubled twice and drove in a run. Kenny Peoples-Walls reached base twice with a double and a walk.

Blake McKnight went 5 2/3 innings to pick up the win. Chris Perry and Zach Loraine combined for 3 1/3 shutout innings of relief.

Sunday's game: Peoria (39-33) at Quad Cities (36-36), 5:00 CT, Rob Kaminsky (2-1, 1.45 ERA)

State College 6 at Jamestown 2

The Spikes fell behind by two early but stormed back in the sixth with a four-run inning. Jhohan Acevedo and Danny Diekroeger collected two hits each out of the leadoff and second spots of the lineup, respectively. Andrew Sohn contributed to the scoring with a solo home run, his first as a professional.

Starter Cody Schumacher allowed two runs in only three innings. Tyler Bray picked up the win after hurling two shutout innings of relief.

Sunday's game: State College (6-3) at Batavia (6-2), 5:05 ET, Austin Gomber (professional debut)

Johnson City 3 at Bluefield 0

Though he was batting last, Carlos Torres led the offense for the Baby Birds. The centerfielder finished the game with two hits and two runs driven in. Blake Drake reached base three times with a hit and two walks.

Ian McKinney was fantastic with seven shutout innings while allowing only two hits. Anderson Gerdel was credited with a two-inning save.

Sunday's game: Johnson City (2-1) vs. Danville (2-0), 4:00 ET, Dailyn Martinez (0-0, 0.00 ERA)

GCL Cardinals 6 vs. GCL Marlins 1

Starter Jorge Rodriguez threw six dominant shutout innings, allowing only two hits and striking out eight.

Julian Barzilli reached base three times with two doubles and a walk. Barzilli scored a run, as well. Southeast Missouri State's Derek Gibson singled twice. Malik Collymore reached base twice, drove in a run, and scored two.

Sunday's game: No games scheduled.

DSL Cardinals 9 at DSL Orioles2 3

Jonathan Rivera collected three hits and drove in two. Andres Luna and Carlos Talavera both had two hits while Luna drove in a pair.

Junior Gonzalez picked up his first win of the season after allowing three runs in five innings.

Sunday's Game: No games scheduled.
