Four Cardinals Named to 2014 NL All-Star Team

St. Louis Cardinals Yadier Molina, Adam Wainwright and Matt Carpenter are returning to MLB’s Midsummer Classic, joined by first-timer Pat Neshek.

In the fan voting for the 2014 National League All-Star team, St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina defeated all challengers. As such, the 31-year-old, considered by many to be the game’s very best at his demanding position. will be making his sixth consecutive appearance in the Midsummer Classic, fourth as a starter.

Joining Molina as NL All-Stars are third baseman Matt Carpenter plus pitchers Adam Wainwright and Pat Neshek. Based on the Cardinals’ NL pennant-winning performance in 2013, manager Mike Matheny will be the NL skipper. That also gave him a number of roster selections, including two used on his players.

Carpenter, selected by his manager, is receiving his second All-Star nod at his second position. The 28-year-old leads the Cardinals with a .378 on-base percentage, ranks second among NL leadoff hitters with 32 RBI and is among the league's top 10 among all players in runs scored and walks.

Wainwright, 32, named by his peer players to the NL squad, will be participating in his third All-Star Game. Along with the Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw, Wainwright has to be one of the leading candidates to be the NL’s starting pitcher. The Cardinals right-hander is the league’s co-leader with 11 wins and is also the league's ERA leader with a stingy 1.89 mark. Wainwright has two shutouts, and has allowed one run or fewer in 11 of his 17 starts.

Neshek, signed as a free agent during the off-season to a make-good minor league deal, was named an All-Star for the first time in his eight-year career. The 33-year-old right-hander has put up the lowest ERA (0.77) and WHIP (0.57) of all NL relievers with at least 30 innings pitched.

Odds and Ends

St. Louis has no players in the Final Vote process, by which five candidates are competing in a separate vote for the last spot on the all-star team.

Six Cardinals made the NL squad in 2013, pictured above. They included starters Molina and Carlos Beltran along with Wainwright, Carpenter, Edward Mujica and Allen Craig.

The 2014 All-Star Game will be held at Target Field in Minneapolis on Tuesday, July 15 at 6:30 PM.
