Cardinals Minor League News: Thursday, 7/17

News on five St. Louis Cardinals minor leaguers from Memphis all the way down to the Gulf Coast League.

Perez from Penthouse to No House

Less than a week ago, Audry Perez was the back-up catcher in St. Louis and seemed on the cusp of getting a chance to impress in the big leagues again. Now, he is off the active roster of the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds, having been placed on the restricted list. This would imply the 25-year-old will be away from the team a considerable time.

Though Perez had been activated by Memphis on July 11, he had not appeared in game action since returning from St. Louis. The Dominican Republic native remains on the Cardinals’ 40-man roster but does not count against Memphis’ 25-man limit.

Rosenberg Back to Memphis Pen Duty

With Perez off the roster, Memphis needed another catcher. They got him from Palm Beach in Dante Rosenberg. The 24-year-old had been with on Redbirds disabled list as their third catcher from the start of the season until June 6. From then until when he was sent to Palm Beach on June 13, the right-handed hitter had just one plate appearance with the Redbirds.

With Palm Beach, Rosenberg played far more, appearing in 14 games over the last month. In 43 at-bats, his line was .233/.298/.302. He had nine singles, a home run and three RBI. Rosenberg will likely back up Ed Easley with Memphis this time around.

Nice Perk for Lopez

The Cardinals have made a recent habit of temporarily promoting players from the Gulf Coast League to nearby Palm Beach when short-term openings occur. Though it is usually with relief pitchers, the Perez situation in Memphis led to catcher Joshua Lopez getting the call to move to the Florida State League Cardinals clubhouse.

Lopez, 18, is in his first season in the US. In his first 54 at-bats over 17 GCL games, the right-handed hitter has a credible line of .278/.350/.407 and has driven in seven runs.

Gerwuins Velazco is likely to be the primary backstop for Palm Beach.

Lee Lost for Chiefs

The Class-A Peoria Chiefs have post the services of reliever Brandon Lee. The right-hander has suffered an ankle injury and was placed on the seven-day disabled list, retroactive to July 15.

The 23-year-old last pitched on July 10 and has been scored upon in all four of his most recent appearances. On the season, Lee has a 6.33 ERA in 21 1/3 innings over 15 appearances. He struck out 16, walked nine and served up two long balls.

The Midwest League Chiefs were not immediately assigned a replacement.

Kuebel Rightfully Moves Up

38th round pick Sasha Kuebel’s Gulf Coast League Cardinals career ended at seven games when the St. Louis-born left-hander was promoted to Johnson City on Tuesday, July 15. In his professional debut stint in the GCL, Kuebel allowed just two runs on 12 hits and one walk in 11 innings. He fanned six, had a ground ball to fly ball ratio of almost two to one, collected a win and two saves.
