Diaz’ Return Tops Cards Minors Wednesday News

Shortstop Aledmys Diaz is recovered enough to return to hitting, though a level lower than before. News on at least six other St. Louis Cardinals farmhands as well.

Diaz Ready to Try Again

The long-awaited third return of prospect shortstop Aledmys Diaz from shoulder problems is occurring Wednesday evening. The 24-year-old has been activated from the disabled list of the Double-A Springfield Cardinals and assigned to the Palm Beach Cardinals, where he is batting third as the A-Advanced club’s designated hitter.

Diaz had been rehabbing at the Cardinals training facility in Jupiter, Florida. His most recent DL stint began on July 1. Diaz also spent from late April until mid-June on the Springfield club's disabled list after first reporting problems during spring training. The Cuban native has played in just 34 games this season and only 17 of them in the field.

Popkins Back to Springfield

After a strong 2013 at Palm Beach, outfielder David Popkins has struggled in 2014. Still, the St. Louis Cardinals have promoted the 24-year-old back to Springfield to take the outfield spot vacated by the traded James Ramsey.

On July 9, Popkins had been returned to A-Advanced. In 25 games with Palm Beach, his line was .242/.287/.389. The switch-hitter had two home runs and 10 RBI in 95 at-bats.

In his first shot at Springfield, 199 at-bats over his first 67 Texas League contests to start the season, Popkins posted a line of .221/.300/.327.

Other Springfield outfielders are Mike O’Neill, Rafael Ortega and recent arrival Charlie Tilson, with Starlin Rodriguez on the disabled list.

Littrell’s Launch

Left-handed pitcher Corey Littrell is making his first start as a member of the Cardinals organization Wednesday night for Palm Beach. Littrell came to St. Louis along with John Lackey on July 31 in the trade for Allen Craig and Joe Kelly.

Littrell, 22, had spent the entire season with A-Advanced Salem, where he led the club with 100.0 innings pitched and 91 strikeouts. He was 5-5 with a 3.60 ERA in 19 games including 18 starts. His ERA was ninth-best in the Carolina League.

Miranda Read His Rights

One lefty arrives and another leaves. The Cardinals released left-handed reliever Danny Miranda from the roster of Palm Beach on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old has experienced an up-and-down 2014. Coming off a good July, in which he posted a 2.35 ERA, Miranda was rocked for three runs in just 1/3 of an inning in what became his Cardinals finale on Sunday.

The Miami native had an 11-game Double-A trial earlier this season, but was returned to A-Advanced after logging a 5.25 ERA in the Texas League. His mark with Palm Beach was 4.24. Miranda was the Cards’ eighth-rounder in 2011 from the University of Miami.

Gaviglio Active Again

Placed on the temporarily inactive list on July 27, and missing two starts, Sam Gaviglio was activated by the Double-A Springfield Cardinals on Tuesday.

The Cardinal Nation Pitcher of the Month for July, 5-10 with a 4.53 ERA on the season, is penciled in to re-join the S-Cards’ rotation on Saturday night at Midland.

Reed Returned to Sender

The man who covered for Gaviglio at Springfield, left-hander Jimmy Reed, was returned to Palm Beach on Monday. Reed, solid in the Florida State League at 4-0, 2.53, had one good start and one rough outing in his short Double-A stint.

In his Texas League debut at Tulsa on July 28, the 23-year-old allowed just one run on three hits over six innings. The next time out, at home on Monday against Arkansas, Reed was roughed up for five runs in five innings. That left him 1-1 with a 4.91 ERA with Springfield.

Scanio Misses Little Time

Right-hander Joe Scanio was activated from State College’s Temporarily Inactive List on Wednesday. The move had just been made on Monday, retroactive to Sunday, August 3.

On July 9, the 24-year-old had been sent down from Peoria to State College. Since his arrival in the New York-Penn League, Scanio threw 11 1/3 innings over nine games. He allowed nine runs for a 7.15 ERA with seven of the runs coming in his most recent three outings.
