Aardsma Back on the Mound

Unavailable to the Memphis bullpen since June 17 with a groin injury that required surgery, reliever David Aardsma is back on the mound. The veteran right-hander has been assigned to the Gulf Coast League Cardinals to begin his official rehab.

A 1-2-3 inning with two strike outs summarizes Aardsma’s maiden voyage on Friday in the rookie-level league.

Perry Hits a Rough Bump

Twice The Cardinal Nation’s Reliever of the Month this season, including one month as the top pitcher in the system, Chris Perry has hit a bump in the road. On Saturday, the A-Advanced Palm Beach Cardinals placed the right-hander on the seven-day disabled list.

In 12 games since joining Palm Beach from Peoria, the 23-year-old has a 1-1 record with a 2.03 ERA and five saves. Perry has 18 strikeouts and five walks in 13 1/3 Florida State League frames.

Herget Gets a Good Bump

Kevin Herget has been promoted from Peoria to Palm Beach to backfill Perry. In 35 appearances, 34 in relief, the 23-year-old right-handed pitcher has a 6-3 record with a 2.81 ERA. Herget fanned 85 and issued 27 free passes in 67 1/3 Midwest League innings.

Loraine’s Layover

The Peoria Chiefs have placed Zach Loraine on the seven-day disabled list with a shoulder injury. Since the right-hander last pitched in relief on August 13, the DL move was made retroactive to August 14.

The 22-year-old, a Midwest League all-star, has a 2-1 record with a 3.09 ERA. Loraine has 10 saves and two holds to go with 58 strikeouts and 16 walks in 58 1/3 innings.

Booden Coming Home

Former Bradley University pitcher Jacob Booden has returned to Peoria as the newest member of the Chiefs. The parent Cardinals promoted the 6-foot-7 right-hander from State College.

Booden appeared in relief 21 times for State College, going 1-2 with a 3.45 ERA and a save, He struck out 37 and walked 17 over 31 1/3 innings. Booden has been pitching especially well recently, having allowed only one run in 8 1/3 August innings over four outings.

Chiefs Share Draft Bounty

Every US level in the Cardinals system from Though Palm Beach through the Gulf Coast League had players from 2014 draft except for Class-A Peoria. That changed on Saturday when 26th-rounder Tyler Bray was promoted to the Midwest League club from State College.

In 17 games for State College, he went 1-2 with a 2.96 ERA. Bray fanned 34 and walked 14 over 27 1/3 innings with just one home run allowed. Bray held New York-Penn League opponents to a .189 average. Recently, the former Louisiana-Monroe hurler has allowed only allowed three earned runs since July 4, a span of 20 innings over 12 outings.

C.J. O.K.?

Peoria All-Star centerfielder C.J. McElroy suffered a right groin strain while making a diving catch in the eighth inning Friday night. As a precaution; the 21-year-old was rested on Saturday night after having played 67 consecutive games. The club is hoping to avoid a stint on the disabled list.

Villegas Joins Rising Tide

With the Spikes losing two pitchers in Booden and Bray, they receive one replacement up from the Appalachian League. Right-hander Kender Villegas went 1-2 with a save and a 3.66 ERA in 19 relief appearances at Johnson City this season. The 21-year-old struck out 38 and issued 11 free passes in 32 innings.

Ehrlich Goes Where Needed

Earlier in the week, Johnson City needed a catcher so the organization moved Adam Ehrlich down from State College. The 21-year-old is at his third level this season, having also appeared in 16 games with Palm Beach.

So far this season, the left-handed hitter’s line is .205/.300/.261 over 88 at-bats in 26 games.

Brookshire Back Quickly

Before his Wednesday road start, Peoria activated left-hander Chase Brookshire from the temporarily inactive list. The 23-year-old went eight days between starts. His start on the 13 was not successful as he allowed five earned runs on 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings.
