On Adam Wainwright.
Working to figure it out. Doesn’t come easy. Doesn’t throw 96-97. Tighter strike zone last night, but was consistent. Pulled it together in his last three innings. Hasn’t received much run support this year, so last night wears pretty hard on him. He sets bar high for himself.
On Kolten Wong batting second.
Scored some runs yesterday. He has been on on a consistent basis. Didn't work out yesterday. A lot of times, don’t mess with something. Jay batted second only on the day Wong took off.
On Sam Freeman.
Having a solid season, Trouble seems to come when they try to stretch him out for a second inning. Walks seem to happen when his pitch count gets up. Not sure why. Using like Maness from the left side.
On Kevin Siegrist.
Last outing for Memphis was good. Hard to tell the nature of his problem. If you trace these far enough back, usually it is physical.
On starters for August 30 doubleheader with the Cubs.
Leaning toward adding a 26th player who would start one of the games. Acknowledged that Lyons and Gonzales are among options. Carlos Martinez likely not under consideration for the start. (Teams can add one extra player eligible on doubleheader days only.)
On optimal number of September call ups.
You can never have too many. Even if they don’t play, younger players can get exposure to the culture. If they are a sponge, it can be a great opportunity. Would like to get arms to help the bullpen. Nice to have extra players. Other factors include big league service time, as well as expense. Certainly don’t want 40 guys, especially in Chicago (small clubhouse).
On Xavier Scruggs.
He’s a hitter. Plays a very good first base, too.
On Tommy Pham.
Haven’t been able to see a lot of him in spring due to injuries. He is a centerfielder. Goes out and chases balls, gets great jumps and runs them down. Plus defender. Hard for outfielders in this organization to be noticed but he has made them take notice. He has had a strong year.
