State College 11 at Tri-City 2

State College put up a six spot in the first and never looked back, thrashing Tri-City 11-2 on the road to take the decisive third game of the Championship series.

The scoring was ignited by Nick Thompson’s two-run blast that plated Danny Diekroeger (walk). 11 Spikes came to the plate before the home club could bat. The deluge featured two doubles, a triple, two fielding errors that allowed players to reach and a run-scoring wild pitch. The visitors, who by the second inning were facing their third of six Tri-City pitchers, added a tally in the fourth before capping it with a four-run sixth.

Diekroeger was in the thick of things, going 3-for-5 with a triple, free pass and touching home three times. Collin Radack also had three of 15 team hits. Luis Cruz and Brett Wiley each had two hits in five at bats while crossing home once with an extra-base hit. Cruz doubled and drove in three and Wiley tripled with an RBI.

Thompson went 2-for-6 in the three hole, scored two and knocked in two. Adam Ehrlich accounted for four tallies, singling once in four at bats with a base-on-balls, scoring twice and driving in two.

Handed a 6-0 lead before he ever took the mound, Daniel Poncedeleon (W, 1-1) was magnificent, limiting the ValleyCats (HOU) to just three hits and a walk and tying his season-high with a six-inning outing. The righty struck out five with seven ground- and three fly-ball outs.

Josh Lucas was shaky in the seventh, surrendering two runs on four hits, including a solo shot. Nick Lomascolo walked one in the eighth but Kyle Grana fanned the side in a perfect ninth.
