Alex Reyes celebrated leaving his teenage years behind in August by putting together arguably his best month in his one-plus years as a St. Louis Cardinals pitching prospect.
In four dominating starts for the Class-A Peoria Chiefs, the 6-foot-3, 185-pound right-hander logged a 1.80 ERA. In 25 innings, Reyes fanned 38 Midwest League batters and walked just six. He increased his ground ball rate and lowered his batting average against.
Though the Cardinals organization recognized Marco Gonzales instead, The Cardinal Nation named Reyes our final system-wide Starting Pitcher of the Month for the 2014 season.
Though his 2014 was his longest playing season by a considerable margin, starting with the organization’s STEP Camp in February, Reyes threw 109 innings total before reporting to instructional league camp to continue to fine-tune his offerings.
Reyes’ potential is well-known nationally. Late last week, the New Jersey native was named the number one prospect in the MWL by Baseball America. In the most recent Cardinals system prospect rankings from The Cardinal Nation, Reyes is fourth, but his strong close to the season hints that he could rise higher in the 2015 rankings, to be compiled later this fall.
I caught up with Reyes in Jupiter, Florida as he was doing his work during instructs. In the following audio interview, Reyes discusses his time as a professional, his adjustments this season, his goals for 2015 and more.
The Cardinal Nation’s extensive series of player and coach interviews from Cardinals instructional league camp in Jupiter will continue in the upcoming days. They will include Mike Shildt, Derrick May, Tim Leveque, Oscar Mercado, Malik Collymore, Carson Kelly, Mason Katz, Bryan Dobzanski, Rowan Wick, Chris Rivera and Jery Then.
