In the Arizona Fall League opener Tuesday, C.J. McElroy had three hits while Sam Tuivailala picked up a save.

Peoria 5 at Surprise 4

The Peoria Javelinas scored three times in the eighth to upend Surprise 5-4 in the season opener.

Atlanta’s Brandon Cunniff got the win, tossing a scoreless seventh. The right-hander, the fourth of six Javelinas hurlers, pitched in relief of the Royals’ Kyle Zimmer who yielded three runs in just 3 2/3.

St. Louis relievers Chris Perry and Sam Tuivailala each faced the minimum in their respective inning of work. Perry induced two groundball outs to one flyball out in the eighth, giving way to Tuivailala who matched that in the ninth, garnering his first save.

The Cardinals’ sole position player to take part was C.J. McElroy who played left, batting ninth. McElroy and catcher Justin O’Conner (Tampa Bay) led the team with three hits apiece, the left fielder doubling once, scoring once and collecting a two-out RBI.
