12 months ago, Tim Leveque was promoted into the position of St. Louis Cardinals minor league pitching coordinator when Brent Strom became the Houston Astros major league pitching coach.
In his first full season managing the organization’s promising pool of pitching talent, Leveque and his coaches have worked extensively with close to 150 youngsters, from former big-leaguers trying to work their way back to green 16-year-olds from foreign lands.
In the following interview, Leveque singles out five who made especially great strides in 2014. They are starter Mike Mayers and relievers Dean Kiekhefer, Sam Tuivailala, Mitch Harris and Chris Perry.
The latter three just began their assignment to the Arizona Fall League, with the lefty Kiekhefer having pitched there in 2013.
The Cardinal Nation’s extensive series of player and coach interviews from Cardinals instructional league camp in Jupiter will continue in the upcoming days. They will include Mike Shildt, Derrick May, Oscar Mercado, Malik Collymore, Carson Kelly, Mason Katz, Rowan Wick, Chris Rivera and Jery Then.
