Cards Arizona Fall League Notebook: 10/11/14

Tyrell Jenkins’ strong AFL debut was wasted by a dreadful day for the Peoria bullpen.

Results from the game played Friday, October 10th.

Salt River 12 at Peoria 2

Tyrell Jenkins’ strong Arizona Fall League debut was squandered by the bullpen in Peoria’s 12-2 shellacking by Salt River.

Jenkins’ four-inning stint, the longest by a Javelinas hurler to date, included first and third frames of back-to-back singles followed by a 6-4-3 double play that ended the scoring threat. The 22-year-old fanned three of six faced in the second and fourth innings, part of his four K’s in all. Jenkins induced five ground- to one fly-ball out and threw 48 pitches, 29 for strikes. He did not walk a batter. According to ESPN's Keith Law, Jenkins' fastball was in the 92-96 mph range.

Southpaw Nick Maronde (CLE) (L, 0-1) did not retire any of the seven faced in the fifth, coughing up six runs that were the majority of the 11 tallies the Rafters scored that frame. Righty Matt Lollis (TB), who stands a towering 6’9”, did not fare much better, giving up the five-run balance with the big blow being a grand slam.

Jacob Wilson, Cody Stanley and C.J. McElroy started for Peoria but went a combined 2-for-10 at the plate. Wilson generated both hits, singling and doubling in three at bats with a walk. His ground-rule double to right in the sixth plated his team’s first run. The third baseman followed that up with an RBI single up the middle in the eighth.

Stanley was a quiet 0-for-4, grounding out twice before finishing the day by flying out to left and center. Defensively, he played first and took part in three double plays. McElroy reached base twice despite going hitless in three at bats with two strikeouts. The Javelinas’ ninth-place batter reached on a fielding error by Salt River’s shortstop in the seventh and worked a one-out walk in the ninth but was subsequently forced at second.

Saturday’s game: Peoria (2-2) at Mesa (LHP Nate Smith (LAA)), 6:35 pm MST, RHP Dillon Baker (CLE) (0-0, ---)
