2014 State College Spikes Player of the Year

The Cardinal Nation’s pick as top hitter on the State College Spikes is outfielder Nick Thompson.

The 2014 New York-Penn League champion State College Spikes’ lineup had many players worthy of being named The Cardinal Nation State College Spikes Player of the Year.

As a team, the Spikes led the NYPL in 10 major offensive categories – runs (398), hits (705), doubles (149), home runs (55), RBI (357), total bases (1046), on base percentage (.343), slugging percentage (.399), batting average (.269) – and had the lowest strikeout to walk ratio in the league at 1.96:1.

While a case could be made for several Spikes, Nick Thompson, the St. Louis Cardinals’ eighth-round pick in this June’s draft, was State College’s best all-around player in 2014.

Thompson was a top-three offensive player in nine different categories and anchored the lineup, playing in 65 games during the Spikes 2014 championship campaign.

The 6-foot-1, right-handed hitter batted .282 with 12 doubles, five home runs and 42 runs driven in. Thompson also led the Spikes with 42 runs batted, tied for fifth most in the NYPL, and walked 39 times, second-most in the league.

Thompson’s discipline at the plate was one of his best offensive assets. The William & Mary product walked three more times than he struck out, and had the second best on-base-percentage in the league, .396.

Thompson had 16 multi-hit games on the season, and 10 multi-RBI performances as well.

The 21-year old outfielder was consistent. Though he never collected more than three hits or three RBI in a single outing, he was held without a hit or a walk in just 11 of 65 games.

Thompson also made just two errors all season long and showed solid range plus a strong arm in the outfield.

Congratulations to Nick Thompson for being named The Cardinal Nation State College Spikes Player of the Year.
