Shaky outings in the latter innings doomed the Javelinas to a 6-3 loss at Mesa. Peoria (2-3) finishes its first week of play in second, a game behind Surprise.
Although starter Dylan Baker (CLE) was charged with the loss when he yielded solo bomb during his two-inning stint, tallies that proved to be the difference in the game crossed home in sixth and seventh. Right-handers Ali Williams (KC) and Louis Head (CLE) each allowed two tallies in their respective innings of work. Head was followed to the mound by St. Louis’ Sam Tuivailala, the seventh and final Peoria hurler of the game.
Tuivailala’s outing began with a hard-hit single to center but the righty, who turns 22 in a week, retired the next batter via a soft grounder to first. The frame’s second out came when the overly-aggressive Mesa runner attempted to take third on a grounder to short but ran into an out instead. After a steal of second, Tuivailala notched a swinging K, tossing 11 pitches, eight for strikes.
The Javelinas’ infield included Jacob Wilson at first and Breyvic Valera manning second. Wilson, the sixth-place batter, singled once in four at bats with a strikeout and took part in one double play. Valera went 1-for-4 out of the eight hole.
